New programs on tap for Adult Ed program

The Island Now

There are some exciting new classes offered in the Roslyn-Herricks-East Williston Adult Education Program this fall.

Magic 101 presents the opportunity to start a new hobby and surprise your friends and family. The class will be inter-active and you will be performing magic tricks during your first session. You will quickly learn tricks with playing cards, mentalism, mathematical oddities, and magic with select props. The class runs for two Wednesday evenings on Oct. 9 and 16.

There are also new musical courses in addition to our Piano Instruction. The Pleasures of Music: A Course for the Curious, goes through history highlighting key moments in music with history, anecdote and pictures. The course is designed for the curious mind as well as for music lovers.

The instructor Margaretha Maimone is a highly accomplished professional musician and concert presenter. The class runs for six Wednesday evenings starting Oct. 16.

Musical Images: How Great Composers Enhance Beauty and Expression in All of the Arts is a new course as well. The course will cover four centuries, from the Biblical inspirations of Monterverdi and Bach, to the operas of Mozart, to the song cycles of Schubert and Mahler and the Impressionism of Debussy. The varied styles of the 20th Century, from folk and jazz to mysticism and minimalism, will also be presented.

The instructor, David Holzman, a prize-winning pianist, will perform and discuss numerous keyboard works, which will add depth and meaning to the larger works discussed. The course runs for three Monday evenings.

Do you play a musical instrument? The adult education program is looking for devoted amateur musicians in the surrounding communities to form an ensemble and play under the auspices of Adult Education.

The kind of ensemble and style of music will depend on the community response. Those interested should call the adult education office at (516) 801-5091.

The Health and Wellness section is also sporting new classes. Sleep Wellness is a one-session class held on Monday, Oct. 21, at 8 p.m. Almost everyone suffers from not getting a proper night’s rest, which can negatively affect many aspects of their health.

Sleep research has shown that various aches and pains, chronic fatigue, and cellular toxicity can all be caused by improper sleep. Lack of sleep also hinders healing and impedes our immune system.

Lecture topics include improving the quality of your sleep, the various stages of sleep, full-body relaxation techniques, what type of sleep is most important and how to get it, and how to choose the mattress and pillow that are right for you.

Healthy Eating and Living is taught by a certified holistic health counselor who will educate, coach and support participants to achieve health and nutrition goals.

This class will make it clear how to eat healthy, determine what foods and beverages are right for you and learn how to shop for and cook simple-to-prepare healthy meals.

The course is offered in two sessions, Wednesday mornings or evenings, for four weeks starting Oct. 16.

The lecture “Presidents in New York” will be presented by expert New York guide Art Zuckerman, who will give an armchair tour of the many sites in New York City related to U.S. Presidents. Attend the lecture, on Thursday, Dec. 5, to learn about Woodrow Wilson’s indiscretions, John Tyler’s secret marriage, and some outspoken presidential family members.

There is still time to sign up for the Gourmet Chef Demonstration and Luncheon Series where participants will enjoy a cooking demonstration from a professional chef and a luncheon. Residents can sign up for one, two or all three parts of the series.

Those who enroll in all three will enjoy a discount. The restaurants being visited in the series are Pearl East on Oct. 21, Page One on Nov. 4, and MP Taverna on Dec. 9.

There are still openings in the Art Museum tour series that offers a unique opportunity to see the important art shows of the season at New York’s galleries and museums with art lecturer Fanshien Mellis as guide.

The adult education program welcomes residents of the Roslyn, East Williston and Herricks School Districts. Residents of all three districts pay the resident rate for course offerings and trips, and are eligible for senior citizen discounts, as well.

Classes are held at both the Roslyn Adult Education and the Herricks Community Center.

Details are in the catalog or online at: www.roslynschools.org. In-person registration is between 10 a.m. and noon on weekdays. A $5 registration fee must be included. Registrations will not be taken over the phone.
