A 16-year-old New Hyde Park resident was arrested last Wednesday for painting a swastika on a sidewalk at the Manor Oaks School.

Luke Georges, 16, of 515 Ingraham Lane in New Hyde Park, drew a swastika and his initials on a rear walkway on the school grounds at 1950 Hillside Ave. on July 24 at approximately 8:30 p.m., according to Nassau County Police. Georges also allegedly spread roofing tar on a set of metal doors and windows at the school.

New Hyde Park-Garden City Park Superintendent of Schools Robert Katulak said the swastika was discovered during a routine examination of the grounds the day after it had been painted there.

“It was a random act,” Katulak said. “It was just a foolish young man who did it on the dare of his friends. He’s just going to have to live with for the rest of his life.”

After plainclothes officers arrested the suspect on Aug. 3 he was charged with third-degree criminal mischief, first-degree aggravated harassment and making graffiti.

Georges was arraigned at First District Court in Hempstead on Aug. 4, and conditionally released to probation. He is due back in court on Aug. 15.
