NHP LL defeats Garden City South

In the finals of the winners bracket New Hyde Park Little League squared off with Garden City South in one of the most exciting District 29 tournament games ever on Wednesday, June 29.

NHPLL came back from deficits of 2-0, 3-1, 5-3 and 7-5 before winning the game in the eighth inning on a walk off single by Ann Grimshaw, scoring Kayla Fitzpatrick with the winning run, sending NHPLL into the district championship.

Jenny Hickey pitched terrific for six innings before Melissa Ward came on in relief in the seventh inning. Ward retired six of the seven batters she faced for the win.

In the seventh inning NHPLL was down 7-5 but came up with two runs to keep the game going. Victoria Mooney, who had three hits on the night, led off with a long double. Maggie Donnelly followed with an excellent at bat resulting in a walk. Samantha Merino knocked in Mooney with a ground out to second, which also advanced Donnelly to third who then scored on a Hickey ground out.
