NHP LL girls team takes district title

The Island Now

The New Hyde Park Little League 11/12 year-old girls softball team won their second straight Little League District 29 Championship.

They will now play in the Little League Section 5 tournament starting Saturday June 30 at noon at Pistillo field in Franklin Square. The winner of the Section 5 tournament will play in the Little League NY State tournament.

The girls from New Hyde Park came out swinging again in this game. After scoring six first-inning runs in the semi final win, they opened the championship game with an eight-run first inning.

There was plenty of offense for NHPLL, but the story of the game was starting pitcher Kayla Fitzpatrick. Fitzpatrick went 3 for 3 and scored two runs leading off, but was even more impressive on the mound. Kayla pitched a four-inning complete game no-hit shutout, striking out six batters in earning the championship game win.

The offense for NHPLL was balanced again. Maggie Donnelly went 2 for 2 with a long RBI triple and two runs scored. Jenny Hickey had two first-inning singles and scored a run. Melissa Ward singled in a run and scored. Katie Tubridy had a perfectly placed bunt single and scored a run. Ann Grimshaw and Nicole Kuzler each had a single and a run scored. Emma Nidermaier walked and scored in the big first inning. Hannah Arkin, Sophia Jacoby and Gabby Morales each played well throughout the district tournament for this impressive group of softball players who now set their sights on the Section 5 competition.
