Construction on the latest phase of road repairs in the Village of New Hyde Park is proceeding as planned.
Tom Gannon, superintendent of the village Department of Public Works, said the work was going smoothly at a village board meeting Tuesday night.
“We are right on schedule,” he said “Everything’s where we should be right now. This is going be quite an ongoing project.”
In his update to the public, Gannon said “all the elevation work and flat work has been completed” and that on Monday, the operation to grade the streets on 6th Avenue, 10th Avenue and 3rd Avenue was done and will be placed by Friday weather permitting. Gannon also mentioned that they were done with handicap ramps.
When Village of New Hyde Park Mayor Daniel Petruccio inquired if any traffic disruptions had occurred, Gannon said accessibility to sidewalks and curbs was a problem because shutting down of lanes.
Trustee Donald Barbieri provided an update on the project to resurface on Jericho based on a meeting with state Sen. Jack Martins (R-Mineola) and representatives of the state Department of Transportation. The village is coordinating its final phase of upgrading the business district along Jericho with the DOT’s plans to repave it.
Barbieri said three contractors will be working on the project. The state DOT has retained a contractor to install traffic lights, another for work on sidewalks and a third has a contractor to repave Jericho Turnpike.
Jericho Turnpike is to be resurfaced from the Queens County line to the Mineola border.
The first phase of what is the final stage of the beautification and upgrade of the New Hyde Park business district along Jericho will be the DOT’s planned installation of countdown crossing signals for pedestrians and resurfacing of the village’s main thoroughfare, according to Barbieri. Preceding that work, Barbieri said National Grid plans to install a new gas main in the village.
National Grid will start next week on installation of a gas main running from from North 12th Street out to Jericho Turnpike, down Jericho Turnpike crossing Ingraham and ending on south 16th Street.
Barbieri said National Grid is adding the gas line because “they think it will provide better to service the community.”
He said the next phase of the village’s portion of the project of the project may begin this winter with planters to be installed on medians along Jericho Turnpike.
• Barbieri unveiled plans for the “Spotlight New Hyde Park” talent contest. He said it would take place January 11 and 12 at 7 p.m. in the William Gill Theatre located upstairs in the village hall. The talent show will be open to singers, musicians, and dancers in the village for anyone up to 21 years old. Applications and parental consent forms are available at New Hyde Park Village Hall and on the village Web site at vnhp.org. The deadline to register is Dec. 21. Prizes will be given out to winners but specifics weren’t given.
“We’re looking forward to kids participating,” Barbieri said.
• The board approved a request for The Citizens Campaign for the Environment, an environmental advocacy organization, to canvas village residents for donations Oct. 15 through Nov. 2 from 4-9 p.m.
