The Village of New Hyde Park is planning a series of summer concerts including a “Spotlight: NHP” competition to give young talent a chance to showcase their singing skills.

The competition, which is to be held starting on Friday night, July 13 in The William Gill Theatre, is intended to be similar to some popular talent competitions on television, according to Village of New Hyde Park Trustee Donald Barbieri.

Competitors will be divided into two categories – those under 12 years old and those aged 13 to 18 years.

Application forms, accessible on the village Web site, https://vnhp.org, should be printed out and submitted at New Hyde Park Village Hall by those interested in competing.

The winners of the weekly competitions, starting July 13, will continue on the following Friday night until a champion is chosen on Aug. 24.

“It’s out hope that the winners will sing at the street fair,” Barbieri said.

Lisa Miranda, village cultural commissioner and a music teacher at New Hyde Park Memorial High School, will oversee the competition.

Barbieri said the concept of a local competition for young aspiring performers has been under consideration since the theater on the second floor of village hall was completed last year.

The village also has scheduled a series of outdoor concert and theater events in New Hyde Park Memorial Park this summer.

That series kicks off on June 20 with Elvis Presley impersonator begins with Anthony Liguori Jr. sponsored by Maspeth Bank. A Frankie Vallie tribute band, the Jersey Four, will perform on July 11.

“Cinderella,” a Plaza Theatrical Production, will be staged in the park on July 25.

Billy Joel tribute band Cold Spring Harbor, featuring former New Hyde Park Village Clerk Pat Farrell will be featured in the park on Aug. 1. The final concert performance of the season will feature Sister Act, vocal impersonations by two sisters who will perform songs by Cher, Tina Turner, and other pop divas.

All performances will start at 7 p.m. in Memorial Park, which is located on Lincoln Avenue, west of New Hyde Park Road between William and Albert Streets.

In case of rain, the performances will be held in The William Gill Theatre at 1420 Jericho Turnpike in Village Hall.
