NHP Stormcats battle Warriors to 1-1 draw

The Island Now

The New Hyde Park BU10 Stormcats played a competitive game last weekend against the Plainview – Old Bethpage Warriors.  The offensive team of Dean Caldwell, Jack Kareff, LJ Tsiforas, Luke Notine and James Gensch kept the ball in the opponent’s half for most of the game. Colin Coope put the ball in the net to give the Stormcats a lead early on.  The defensive team of Ryan Wasserman, Joseph Vieni, Ryan Oommen and Dino Vidaich did a great job of stopping the Warriors in their tracks. Brendan Cooper had a solid run both in the goal and on the field. The game ended in a 1-1 tie.

New Hyde Park TOP Soccer

Seniors 3, Parents 3. The Parents came to play and they had an unbelievable game of passing the ball, taking shots, excellent defending and goaltending. The parents combined to score three goals. The Players stepped up their game with tough defense by Patrick Williams, Adam Strominger and Nicholas Mazariegos. Tim Roth, Debbie Chin and Charlie Hinz were strong in midfield followed by great offensive plays by Stefani Egre, Andrea Matteo, Matthew Saraiva and Sebastian Gonzalez.  Once again David Glass came through for the Seniors and had a hat trick.  With the score tied and out of regulation time, the game went into shootouts.  After 10 minutes of great shots and some impressive saves by Mrs. Egre and Coach Matthew Bursig (for the Players), the score was still even with David Glass as the last shooter.  He took his time, sized up the situation and scored!  The players were jubilant in the victory.  The parents realized that they were so close and yet now have to wait until the fall to taste success. It was an awesome game and a brilliant season for the Seniors.

Intermediates/Juniors 12,  Parents 6. The Parents weren’t even close in this match. It was an omen that Andrew Faller had a strong kickoff and led his team onto victory. John Bertuccio scored five goals against the Parent goalie, Mr. Bertuccio.  John didn’t realize that the next day was Father’s Day! Mrs. Hanratty and Mrs. Cheung had two goals but the players dominated the field with formidable defense by Alex Laroia, who wouldn’t let his Mom get any shots on goal.  Lucas Mitacchione added two goals as well as Stephen DiBiasi and Nick Krieger.  David Cheung, Lucas Lee and James Sarro were dynamic as midfielders running around the field and breaking up the parents’ plays.  Kyle Hanratty took over in goal after Jesse Sarro hurt his ankle and both Jesse and Kyle kept the scoring to a minimum. Towards the end of regulation time, the score was 11-4.  Mr. Sarro and Mr. Krieger were able to add two more goals to bring the score to 11-6.  Lucas Mitacchione, in the final play of the game and the season, had a breakaway for the players and added the 12th goal.  There was no mercy rule in this contest!  The athletes’ advice to the parents for the summer break:  practice, practice, practice.  It was another superb season for the Intermediates and Juniors.

I would like to thank all the athletes for their dedication to soccer on and off the field.  Your parents are wonderful people who are there every week and are very impressive cheerleaders.  We also want to extend a special thank you to the NHP Wildcats Board of Directors who support the program.   And of course, the program wouldn’t be possible without all of our volunteers.  We are extremely lucky to have so many helpers and coaches both indoors and outdoors.  Even with SATs, family, school and job commitments, we always seem to have enough volunteers to help with all of the practices and tournaments. Good luck to our senior volunteers:  Neil Duggan and Sabrina Rodgers. And a very loud thank you to Kevin Oster, Tony Minerva, Rich, Maiken, Matthew Bursig, Jessica, Matt and Katie Bletsch, and finally Rich Bletsch and Brian Evers who founded this program and have kept it as successful as it is.  The program had over 60 athletes registered with the program and there were usually 40-45 athletes at every practice. Congratulations to all who made this such a successful soccer year.
