NHPLL girls take 2 from GC South

The Island Now

On a glorious sunny day at Nuzzi, the NHPLL Girls Juniors swept a doubleheader against a talented Garden City South Squad, which sported two very good pitchers.

The NHP ladies were led by the stalwart pitching of winning pitcher Lisa Pellegrino who surrendered just two hits in four innings of work – netting nine K’s in the 3-1 victory.

Jillian Sakowich came on in relief and finished with six K’s while allowing just one hit for the save. Sakowich and Pellegrino (who usually team up to form a textbook double play combo at shortstop and second base), proved their worth in the circle for the deep NHP pitching staff.

Geena Fornataro was the hitting star with a scorching line drive missile over the left field fence for a two-run homerun. The offense was also paced by the timely hitting of Kim Spagnuolo (1-2, double), Danielle Dziomba (1-1), Kristen Hickey (1-2), and Sakowich and Pellegrino who both contributed (1-2) performances and ran the bases with reckless abandon.

Mary-Kate O’Boyle was her usual solid self behind the plate keeping the GCS runners at bay. Sabrina Santoruvo played gold glove defense at 2B and SS with four assists, while Caitlyn Booth and Jamie Rodgers both had quality at bats against the sometimes dominating GCS pitchers.

The NHP offense exploded for 10 hits in game two to secure an 8-0 victory as Kristen Hickey (2IP/2K’s/1 hit) and her counterpart Geena Fornataro (5IP/10K’s/1H) both threw high heat while mixing a variety of pitches.

Sabrina Spiridigliozzi, Paola Quitada, and Jalissa Sanchez were each 1-2 with two RBIs.

Elizabeth Limonta received game ball honors with her sterling defensive performance and a solid two-out double for two RBIs. Mary Sakowich -Kate O’Boyle, Kristen Hickey, Danielle Dziomba, were 1-2 with an RBI. Marissa Palazzo played a nice right field making two defensive gems and Jillian Filippi anchored the infield at 3B. Jillian (2-3, 3 SB) and Lisa Pellegrino (2-3, 2 RBIs) set the table at the top of the order with both scoring on Kim Spagnuolo’s triple in the first.
