Nicholas Martone, Mineola FD vet, dies

Nicholas Martone, an ex-Chief and 62-year member of the Mineola Fire Department, died on Feb. 11. He was 83.

Martone was a U.S. Navy veteran who served during the Korean War. 

A lifelong Mineola resident, Martone joined the fire department’s Engine Company 3 in 1950. 

He served as fire warden from 1954 to 1958.  In 1958 he was elected 2nd lieutenant of Engine Company 3 and was elected captain two years later. He served four years as an assistant chief from 1962 through 1966 and was elected as chief of department in 1966.  

Through the subsequent two decades, Martone was elected multiple times to represent his company as a warden on the department Fire Council. He also served as fire department treasurer and company trustee. He was one of the charter advisors for the Mineola Junior Fire Department.

“He was a very decent gentleman,” said Mineola Fire Department Chief Joseph Pratt.

He operated Martones Garage which was located on Roslyn Road (now a Walgreens). 

Nicholas married his wife, Rosemary, in 1954 and together they raised five children. 

His sons, Andrew and Nicholas, grandsons Andrew Jr., Joseph and Nicholas are firefighters in the Mineola Fire Department. 

He is survived by his children, Andrew, Nicholas, Cathy Maiolica, Nancy D’Avanzo, and Carol Losquardo; grandchildren Andrew, Melissa, Joe, Lex, Shannon, Nicholas II, Erkalyn, Morgan, Nick and Stephen, and many nieces and nephews.  

A wake will be held at Cassidy Funeral Home, 156 Willis Avenue, on Friday, Feb. 15 at 2 p.m. – 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. – 9 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Corpus Christi Church on Saturday at 9:45 a.m. Interment will follow at Holy Rood Cemetery.
