Nordstrom Rack celebrates opening

A two-story, 53,000-square-foot Nordstrom Rack store officially opened its doors on Friday at the site of the former Filene’s Basement on Northern Boulevard in Manhasset.

The opening kicked off on Thursday with a pre-opening party with shopping opportunities and catered food and drink, then continued on Friday with raffles and other festivities.

Nordstrom Rack joins supermarket King Kullen, department store Marshalls and arts and crafts retailer Michaels as part of the Manhasset Center, owned by the New Hyde Park-based Kimco Realty Corporation. A DSW shoe store also opened on the first floor of the building in mid May.

“We are thrilled that the new Nordstrom Rack at Manhasset Center gives us the opportunity to serve new and existing customers more conveniently on the north shore of Long Island,” said Naomi Tobis, an event marketing coordinator with Nordstrom Rack. “So far the response from the community has been positive. The offering at the Rack changes several times a week with each delivery, so we hope customers will stop by often to discover what’s new.”

Kimco purchased the 180,000-square-foot Manhasset Center, located at 1400 Northern Blvd., in 1999.

Filene’s Basement was located in the shopping center for more than two decades, but its parent company Syms Corp. filed for bankruptcy protection in November 2011 and the store closed in January 2012.

Kimco redeveloped the store in about a year to accommodate DSW and Nordstrom Rack, which sells discounted merchandise from the upscale retail chain.

Nordstrom Rack, which carries Nordstrom merchandise at 50-60 percent off original prices, opened two Long Island locations last year at the Huntington Shopping Center and at the Gallery at Westbury Plaza. Another store was also relocated to White Plains.
