More than two years after Filene’s Basement filed for bankruptcy and closed it Manhasset location, the owners of the two-story, 53,000-square-foot space that once housed the clothing store are preparing to reopen with two new tenants in the coming weeks.

A DSW shoe store is slated to open on the first floor around May 15, while a Nordstrom Rack department store will open in early June, said officials of the New Hyde Park-based Kimco Realty Corp., which owns the property.

“These things take a long time to make happen, starting with marketing the space to potential tenants to seeing this place open,” said Joshua Weinkranz, the president of Kimco’s Northeast division. “A lot of things need to happen and it takes a lot of time, and it’s very satisfying to get to the end of that road and see them open for business.”

Weinkranz said Kimco purchased the 180,000-square-foot property at 1400 Northern Blvd. in 1999 and have since redeveloped the site to accommodate a King Kullen, Marshalls clothing and Michaels arts and crafts store.

Filene’s Basement was located in the shopping center for more than two decades, but its parent company Syms Corp. filed for bankruptcy protection in November 2011 and the store closed in January 2012.

Weinkranz said after Filene’s closed, Kimco began marketing the space.

The building, he said, was redeveloped in about a year to accommodate DSW and Nordstrom Rack, which sells discounted merchandise from the upscale retail chain.
