The Town of North Hempstead is expanding its recycling program, effective immediately, citing the numerous benefits to the local environment and economy. The town is now accepting plastics numbers four, five and six in addition to the previously accepted plastics numbers one and two.
These numbers can be found on the bottom of most plastic bottles and containers inside the “recycle triangle.” These plastics include thoroughly rinsed bottles, food containers, detergent bottles, personal care bottles and cleaning supply bottles.
“For us, reduce, reuse and recycle is more than just a catchy phrase, it’s an ongoing pursuit,” said Town of North Hempstead Supervisor Kaiman. “With the variety of new programs and partnerships we have with nine school districts and over 40,000 students, we are helping keep North Hempstead and the planet Earth Green.”
In addition to accepting a wider variety of plastics, the town will continue to receive metal, glass, paper and cardboard.
Metals and glasses that are accepted include cans, clean aluminum foil and tins, bottles and jars. Paper and cardboard items that are taken include newspapers, magazines, phone books, loose paper, folders, corrugated cardboard, clean pizza boxes, food boxes and mail. Residents are urged to thoroughly rinse plastic, metal and glass containers before recycling.
The collection schedules vary among communities in accordance with individual garbage districts. Some garbage districts supply their residents with the appropriate recycling can, but others may not. It is important to know your garbage district when trying to obtain information. The town also announced that the next S.T.O.P. (Stop Throwing Out Pollutants) event, which offers residents the opportunity to safely dispose of hazardous household waste, will be held on Saturday, Sept. 7 from 9:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Tully Park in New Hyde Park.
In addition, the Town accepts and properly disposes of appliances, electronic waste, CFL light bulbs, lithium, rechargeable and button batteries six days a week throughout the town.
