North Hempstead receives $2.4M for Sandy-related fixes

The Town of North Hempstead has received $2.4 million from the Federal Emergency Management Agency to fund five projects primarily in Manhasset and Port Washington as part of ongoing recovery efforts from Superstorm Sandy.

Since the 2012 storm, North Hempstead has received more than $34 million from FEMA for 28 projects throughout the town. 

Four other projects are still awaiting approval, and the town has yet to submit funding requests on five others.

In a statement, North Hempstead Town Supervisor Judi Bosworth said the funding “will help us restore so many areas that are critical to the quality of life and infrastructure of the Town of North Hempstead.”

Three projects relate to parks: $1.8 million to replace asphalt from the southern parking lot at North Hempstead Beach Park that was ruined due to flooding, a $75,739 project to repair a retaining wall and replacing fill at Robert Drayton Park in Port Washington and a $133,973 expenditure to replace about 3,500 cubic yards of sand and materials from the Harbor Links Public Golf Course.

North Hempstead also received more than $100,000 for the for the townwide removal and disposal of 152 trees killed during the storm, as well as $266,852 to replace a soil embankment about 165 linear feet long and with 360 yards of cubic fill that was washed out along Bayview Avenue in Manhasset.
