North High puts on ‘South Pacific’

The Island Now

North High School’s Junior Players will present “South Pacific,” Rogers and Hammerstein’s award-winning musical, from Nov. 14 to the 16.

South Pacific is based on James A. Michener’s Pulitzer Prize-winning 1947 book, “Tales of the South Pacific.” The story, with a progressive message on racism, centers on an American nurse stationed on a South Pacific island during World War II who falls in love with a middle-aged expatriate French plantation owner but struggles to accept his mixed-race children.

A secondary romance, between a U.S. lieutenant and a young Tonkinese woman, explores his fears of the social consequences should he marry her. Popular songs from South Pacific include: “I’m Gonna Wash That Man Right Outa My Hair,” “Some Enchanted Evening,” “There Is Nothing Like a Dame,” and “I’m in Love with a Wonderful Guy.”

“South Pacific” will play at &30 p.m. on Nov. 14, 15 and 16 as well as an added matinee performance on Saturday, Nov. 16, at 2:30 p.m. The show will in the school’s auditorium, 35 Polo Road.
