North Shore University Hospital has been recognized with a 2013 IPRO Quality Award for its efforts to ensure patient-centered care. The Quality Award is given annually by IPRO, the not-for-profit Medicare Quality Improvement Organization for New York State, to recognize organizations and professionals that demonstrate a commitment to improving the quality of care provided to New York’s Medicare beneficiaries. The awards were given during IPRO’s 29th Annual Meeting, June 4 at the LaGuardia Marriott Hotel.

“We strive daily to strengthen the relationship of our medical professionals with our patients and their family members,” said Michael Gitman, MD, vice chair for academic affairs and quality for the North Shore-LIJ Health System’s department of medicine. “This award recognizes our commitment to transparency and the progress we have made in communicating effectively with our patients and their families, whose trust and support we value.”

“North Shore University Hospital has demonstrated significant improvements in the care it provides, as a result of a collaborative and focused effort,” said Clare B. Bradley MD, MPH, senior vice president and chief medical officer, IPRO. “We thank North Shore for their commitment to improving the health of New Yorkers.”

The hospital’s efforts are exemplified by its development and implementation of an educational initiative and a team to support the medical staff in communicating with patients and families dealing with unanticipated adverse events. This initiative was supported by many people within the organization, including the chief quality officer, NSUH quality department, NSUH nursing, risk management and the North Shore-LIJ department of medicine.
