For one day at least, Old Westbury Gardens went to the dogs.

The occasion was the gardens’ annual Dog Walk on Saturday in which leashed dogs and their masters walked the grounds of the former estate of John Shaffer Phipps in Old Westbury.

“The event was very well attended with over 5,000 people combined coming over from different parts of Long Island,” said Vince Kish, director of communications at Old Westbury Gardens.

“Since it was the first weekend we had a nice weather and I think people came out in full force,” Kish said.

The gardens will host a second dog-related event this year when it hosts a dog rescue show in which people who want to buy or rescue a dog can come in and do that, Kish said.

Old Westbury Gardens opens at 10 a.m., the historic house opens at 11 a.m. and closes at 5 p.m.

Adults pay $12, seniors pay $10 and kids can purchase a ticket for $7.

“Now that the weather is starting to get nicer, it is good for people to come out,” Kish said. “I personally prefer people to come visit around May before it also becomes unbearably hot.”
