Old Westbury snaps losing streak at seven

The Island Now

The SUNY College at Old Westbury baseball team snapped a three-game losing streak Sunday with a dominant 7-1 win over the Baruch Bearcats from Gregg Alfano Field.  Old Westbury improved to 3-11 on the season while sending the Bearcats to 3-7.  Old Westbury has won the last eight contests against Baruch dating back to the 2009 season.

Baruch scored first in the fourth with an infield ground out by Nicholas Pomo-Roman that sent Keith Ezersky home for the 1-0 lead.  Old Westbury answered right back in the bottom of the inning with a Byron White one out RBI single that scored Nick Yip.

Yip doubled Old Westbury’s advantage in the following inning with a triple to score Tommy Ziegen.  Jonathan Pagan then stepped to the plate with a triple to score Yip, followed by a Kevin Licul single that sent Pagan across home plate for a 4-1 advantage.  White continued the scoring with a sacrifice fly to push Licul across the plate to make it a four run lead.

In the seventh, John Angelino singled home Pagan for the Panthers to take a 6-1 advantage.  Old Westbury closed out the scoring books in the eighth with a pinch hit Matteo Gaudio run-scoring single, which plated Ziegen.

Old Westbury starter Tim Ingram (1-2) pitched seven strong innings to record his first win of the season.  Ingram allowed one run off two hits and two walks while registering five strikeouts.  Caleb Olessen and Alex DiSanto combined to close out the final two innings in relief of Ingram to solidify the win.

Jacob Coners’ career-best 13-game hitting streak ended after going 0-for-4 at the plate.

Women’s Lacrosse

The SUNY College at Old Westbury women’s lacrosse team got off to a great start on Saturday evening but couldn’t keep up the pace in the second half, as the Panthers lost to the Bard Raptors, 12-8, at Danzi Stadium.  The loss moved the Panthers to 1-4 on the season, while Bard opened at 1-0.

Courtney Gallagher, Sara Bey and Jessica Walker scored two goals apiece for Old Westbury, while Maria Dischley recorded career-highs of six draw controls and six ground balls to go along with four caused turnovers and her fourth goal of the season.  Gallagher also added five ground balls while Bey scooped up four and had three draw controls.  Goalkeeper Jackie Cartagena finished with seven saves.
