OP Soccer players shine on sunny day

The Island Now

It was a fine Saturday for New Hyde Park TOP soccer.

The Red team seemed recuperated from the previous weekend’s tournament.  Andrea Matteo and Matthew Saraiva had many opportunities to score but the ball just couldn’t find the back of the net on this beautiful fall day.

Samuel Ho and Jefferson Yen were strong defenders for the Red team.

Green team’s midfielders Sebastian Gonzalez and David Glass, however, made some excellent passes to their strikers Samantha Duggan and Stefani Egre with Stefani scoring the two Green team goals.

The Green team’s defensive line of Charlie Hinz, Mary Glass, Harrison Stein and Tristan Yang made it very difficult to set plays.

Billy Russo, Adam Strominger and Joe Cuban of the Red team played excellent defense but it was not Red team’s day to score.

It was a good game played by all the athletes.

The coaches decided to combine both the intermediate and juniors groups for the match.  Jesse Sarro led the teams with the help of other coaches in some dribbling and shooting warm-ups.  And what followed was another action-packed game for the athletes.

Josh Hom of the Blue Whales took control of the field and scored two quick goals.

The Red Strawberries defense settled down and strikers Kyle Hanratty and Lucas Mitacchione had many attempts on goal.

However, Petros D’Amico once again dove and grabbed the ball, making his usual fantastic saves. He added punting to his repertoire so the Strawberries’ midfielders Kenson Valellus and Demond Pearson were caught off guard.

But Kyle and Lucas finally broke through and were able to score two goals, with one assist from Brian Roach who was solid in the goal all game for the Strawberries.

John Bertuccio added the third goal for the Blue Whales.

With the go-ahead goal, Jaiyson Almanzar, Brian Lawrence and Desmond O’Callaghan alternated between midfield and defense to preserve the victory.  While practicing penalty shots on the sidelines, newcomer Demitri Georgedakis cheered his Blue team on.

It was a close match for the two teams but the Blue Whales had the extra edge in scoring.
