A former New York Institute of Technology professor on the Old Westbury campus, who was accused of unlawful recording in a campus bathroom, was found dead on Thursday in his apartment in Manhattan in what is believed to be a suicide, the NYPD said.

Jackie L. Conrad, 39, was found by his wife in their apartment on Adam Clayton Powell Boulevard, authorities said.

An autopsy will be done to determine the cause of death, a NYPD spokesperson said, but Conrad left a note behind asserting his embarrassment over his bathroom surveillance arrest.

On July 13, Conrad, an anatomy professor, was arrested after it was discovered that he allegedly placed a pen camera in a handicapped-accessible on the third floor of the Kenneth Riland Building on campus. He was held on $5,000 bail, according to court records.

Conrad was a professor at NYIT since 2010, and the day after he was charged, he was fired, a school spokesperson said.

“Jack Conrad was a valued and respected faculty member at NYIT for 6 years,” said Elizabeth Sullivan, director of media relations at the college. “Accomplished in his field of paleontology, Jack was known for his dedication and enthusiasm for his work. His former colleagues are deeply saddened by this tragic turn of events”
