Plandome Heights honors Boy Scouts

Plandome Heights trustees honored Plandome Boy Scout troop 71 on Monday for helping retire the village flag in early April.

Scoutmaster Chris Simone presented trustees with a commemorative plaque containing the flag’s remains, which he said he discovered while checking to see that the flag had been entirely burned.

“Because [the remains] are considered part of the flag, when they survive you have to dispose of them properly and one of the ways we do that in scouting is to present them to somebody as an honor,” Simone said.

The back of the plaque contained a transcript of the ceremony, which took place in Alpine Scout Camp in New Jersey.

Boy Scout Patrick Sheehan read a portion of the honor the scouts presented to the board, which was also printed on the back of the plaque.

“It was a very solemn and distinguished ceremony,” Simone said. “I think that most people never even get a chance to witness a flag retirement ceremony, let alone participate in one.”

Village of Plandome Heights Mayor Ken Riscica led the board in accepting the plaque, saying that it would be put in a “place of honor.”
