The Port Washington Library has received $150,000 in state funding for the renovation of its children’s room.

Officials said the grant, acquired by state Sen. Jack Martins’ (R-Mineola) office, will offset renovation costs for a children’s room that will offer books, space for creative projects, a workshop, music stations, areas for study and play, a recycling center a and sections for fifth and sixth graders.

“The Port Washington Library does a wonderful job serving families, so well in fact that they need to modernize and revitalize their children’s room to accommodate the growing need,” Martins said.

“The improvements will benefit an entire new generation of Port Washington children, and I am pleased to help support this community improvement project,” he added.

Library officials said a renovation is necessary to provide flexibility for the room’s use by various programs and to curb overcrowding that arises due to rapidly changing technologies.

“I want to thank Senator Martins for his continuous support of the Library and particularly the Children’s Room renovation,” Port Washington Library Director Nancy Curtin said.

“The Library considers this the most important project it will undertake applying new learning and technological advances to enhance the many ways that children learn,” she added.
