Port Washington Board of Education reviews district-wide security improvements

Representatives from BBS Architects unveiled designs Tuesday for district-wide security improvements in Port Washington schools.

Project Managers Frank Giacchetto and James Weydig said all seven schools in the district will be equipped with vestibules that require two points of access before entering the building.

Giacchetto said all vestibules will be equipped with a camera that will be monitored by a staff member at each school building.

The staff member, Giacchetto said, will then identify the visitor on the camera before allowing them to enter the building.

Once the visitor has entered the building, they will proceed to a window, where they will present their identification, Giacchetto said.

Giacchetto said after the visitor presents their identification at the window, and it is accepted, the visitor will be allowed to enter the building.

“[We] want to create a secure vestibule that allows staff to screen all visitors on a school day,” Giacchetto said.

Superintendent Kathleen Mooney said the improvements to the vestibules were included in the $69,877,198 bond referendum that was approved in March.

Mary Callahan, assistant superintendent-business said the district allocated approximately $950,000 for the improvements.

Giacchetto said he and Weydig are in the process of working with the district to finalize the improvements.

Construction of the vestibules is scheduled for the summer of 2017, Giacchetto said.

In other business, a moment of silence was held prior to the start of the meeting to remember the victims of last week’s terror attacks in Paris.

Trustees William Hohauser and Elizabeth Weisburd were absent from the meeting.

The next meeting will be on Tuesday Dec. 8 at 8 p.m. at Paul D. Schreiber High School.
