The Port Washington Board of Education on Tuesday approved tenure for 16 of its administrators, teachers, and paraprofessionals.

Ira Pernick, principal of Paul D. Schreiber High School, and Pia Sanchez, assistant principal of Weber Middle School, were among those granted tenure.

“We are so fortunate to have these two administrators in our district for all that they have done for the children,” said school board President Karen Sloan. “Their endless devotion to the students and the time and effort they put in, it’s what matters most.”

Before each of the newly tenured teachers and paraprofessionals were honored, Superintendent of Schools Kathleen Mooney commented about the recipients.

“Our students see their future through our eyes, while we may not always see the rewards of our work as quickly as we would like, we know that our efforts shape the lives of our students in ways that we cannot imagine,” she said.

Following the awards ceremony a brief intermission took place in the school’s cafeteria, where food and refreshments were served.

In other developments:

• Assistant Superintendent Mary Callahan reminded voters of the May 20 budget vote, which runs from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m at Weber Middle School. The school district has set forth a $144,670,917 budget that represents a 3.79 percent increase from 2013-14 and a 1.35 percent tax levy increase.

• Callahan also noted that two current board members are running for uncontested reelection. The board member election will take place during the budget vote on May 20 as well.
