Port Washington school trustees on Thursday appointed Pia Linda Sanchez, the assistant principal at Carrie Palmer Weber Middle School in Port Washington, to be the new principal at South Salem Elementary School.

Sanchez replaces Christopher Shields, who in July became principal at Weber following an 11-year stint at South Salem.

“During her time in Port Washington, Pia Sanchez has proven she is both an effective leader and communicator,” said Port Washington school Superintendent Kathleen Mooney in a statement. “I am confident that her experience working at Carrie Palmer Weber Middle School will provide a solid foundation for a seamless transition to South Salem Elementary School.”

Sanchez was not immediately available for comment.

She has spent the last 12 years with the Port Washington School District, having served as a school counselor at Weber for eight years prior to becoming its assistant principal in 2011.

Sanchez holds a bachelor of arts in sociology from Adelphi University, a master of science in school counseling from Long Island University and a certificate of advanced study in education from the State University of New York at Stony Brook.

She is pursuing a doctorate in educational leadership at Hofstra University.
