Nassau County Executive Edward Mangano appointed New Hyde Park resident Edward Powers to the Nassau Community College’s Board of Trustees last week.

The appointment of Powers, a lifelong resident of New Hyde Park and graduate of Nassau Community College, was confirmed by the Nassau County Legislature.

Powers currently serves as the director of emergency management for the Town of Hempstead and has been a member of the New Hyde Park Fire Department for over 30 years. He had previously worked in the mutual fund industry.

After attending Nassau Community College, Powers graduated from Adelphi University with a degree in business administration and communications.

“I consider my educational experience at Nassau second to none,” Powers said in a release issued by Nassau Community College.

“I hope to make a constructive contribution as I join the distinguished Nassau Community College Board of Trustees,” he said.

Nassau County Legislature Richard Nicolello (R-NewHyde Park) said he expected Powers would be an asset to the Nassau Community College board.

‘He’s very interested in community issues and has been to school board meetings over the years,” Nicolello said. “He’s a particularly bright guy. And once he gets involved in something, he learns it intensively.”

Powers has received numerous certifications and credentials from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the Emergency Management Institute, among other organizations. He also has served on the state Division for Women-Nassau County Advisory Council. He is a member of the Greater New Hyde Park Chamber of Commerce and the Stewart Manor-New Hyde Park Republican Club.

His mother, Angela Powers, is the longtime leader of the Stewart Manor-New Hyde Park Republican Club.

Powers will fill the term of a former board member, which is set to expire in June 2014.

“Edward Powers brings to NCC the experience of a student, the appreciation of an alumnus, and a ‘how-to and can-do’ record that will be an enormous resource to the college as it navigates the opportunities and challenges that are on the horizon,” Nassau Community College acting President Dr. Ken Saunders said in the release.
