Program to honor Isadora Duncan

The Island Now

Great Neck-based Dance Visions NY will presents “The Divine Flame: The Life, Times, Inspirations and Dance of Isadora Duncan” on Sunday, Jan. 17, at 2 p.m. at the Jericho Library Auditorium at 1 Merry Lane in Jericho, and at the Long Beach Public Library Auditorium, 111 W Park Ave. in Long Beach.

“The Divine Flame” is a multi-disciplinary program that brings together Duncan’s dramatic life, her revolutionary dances and the art and music that inspired her.

Dance Visions NY presents the authentic Duncan dances to the music of Chopin, Schubert, Brahms, Gluck, and Scriabin.

Featured in this program about Isadora’s life and art are actress and television personality Shirley Romaine as narrator and Duncan dancers Beth Jucovy and Adrienne Ramm, sisters, who have been immersed in the Duncan tradition since childhood. Their life-time teachers included Anna Duncan, Julia Levien and Hortense Kooluris.

Dancers Louisa Armstrong and Vanessa Ferranti as well as teen dancers, all trained in the Duncan aesthetic by MJucovy, round out the program.

Accompanying musicians are pianist Mark Fiedler, soprano Patti Dunham and flutists Herbert Waldren and Bernard Rose.

The program incorporates slides of Isadora and the art that inspired her. The Divine Flame was presented from 1995- 2001 to wonderful reception throughout the Metropolitan area and in 2009 for the Hofstra Museum of Dance. Dance Visions is reviving this acclaimed program.

There is no fee for tickets. For ticket reservations, please call Dance Visions NY at 516 314 2359 or the individual venues, Jericho: 516 935 6790; Long Beach: 516 432 7201

The mother of modern dance, Duncan was a pioneering feminist and one of the first international superstars. The originality of her art characterized her life, which was restless and exciting, triumphant and tragic. This program brings together her story, her dances, and music to create a fascinating theater piece.
