PTAs help make Mineola strong

The Island Now

I recently had the honor of installing the 2011-12 Mineola PTA/PTO executive officers. Forty volunteers from eight units serving six schools have bravely and generously stepped forward to play an even larger role in their children’s education than that of the already involved parent. I applaud their enthusiasm and offer my continued support.

The five elementary units, Mineola SEPTA and Mineola District Council of PTAs gathered in the first joint Spring Social/Installation dinner. Outgoing board members and principals were recognized. The Jenkins Award, and honorary lifetime membership to NYS PTA, was presented to six members for outstanding dedication to children. With more than 100 attendees, it was a joy to have so many people together.

The Mineola Middle School PTA and Mineola High School PTSA hosted their second Joint Spring Social/Installation. PTA officers new and old, members, school administrators and Jenkins Award recipients celebrated in style another year of successful parent, teacher and community collaboration.

Research shows that family involvement promotes student success. Students with involved parents are more likely to earn higher grades and pass their classes, attend school regularly, have better social skills and go on to postsecondary education. When families, schools and communities work together, student achievement improves, teacher morale rises, communication increases and family, school and community connections multiply (pta.org).

Mineola is blessed with many active parent based volunteer groups beyond the PTA, including Mineola Music Parents and Mineola Athletic Boosters. It is little wonder that we boast a state champion marching band, spectacular theatre, winning athletic teams, student organizations of every flavor and over 90% of our graduating high school seniors continuing on to 2- and 4-years colleges.

I am pleased that my children are part of a school system where parents advocate for quality education, and I am proud to be a part of this community where we all live and learn.

Robin Bischoff

Immediate Past President

Mineola District Council of PTAs
