In a showdown of two teams looking to move up from the middle of the pack in ND1, the NHP Lady Pumas squared off with the always tough and physical Port Washington Dragons.
Both teams had their chances in this game, but it was NHP that was able to take advantage of a loose ball in front of goal that Cara Becker slammed home on a spin-shot to give NHP a very hard fought 1-0 win.
The win gives NHP a 3-1-2 record – good for a second place tie with Albertson in ND1.
The offense was led by Cara Becker (super spin-shot to give us a 1-0 lead midway thru the first half of play, super blocks, and a very nice far post cross), Katie Krems (just missed on two high and hard shots at the goalie on breakaways and nice corners/crosses/goal-kicks), Eleni Spiratos (sacrificing her body right and left while playing a heck of a center-midfield), Theodora Papadoniou (nice pressure on goal, throwins, and free kick), Isabel Ugolini (very nice passing, close marking, and good pressure on goal from midfield), Sophia Leeds (very dangerous throwins and a good corner kick), and Kira Crehan (nice header, close marking of ‘Becker’ and passing).
Hats off to the defense and goalies who all played a whale of a game – Casey Sanders (fantastic job closing down ‘Jo-Jo’, and ‘Becer’, coming back to slide
tac le a girl on a breakaway,
and giving bacmuch of watch she got in the way of physical play), Mackenzie Griffin (very nice trapping, headers and close-in clears up the sideline), Stephanie Karczewski (great traps, coming back to running down JJ and Becker, and nice passing up the flanks).
In goal was Edna Dudek (some super catches of long range laser shots, good coming out of goal and clearing, and nice punting – super game), and Izzy Glennon (who played less than 100 percent in the first half of the game at striker and finished up at goalie, smoothly fielding her position and gabbing balls coming into the box just ahead of attackers).
Great effort. Keep up the
good work. Casey Conners and Clare Iriarte – feel better!
There will be tryout for the NHP Lady Pumas GU12 for fall) on June 3, 10, 15 at 6 p.m. at Tully Park.
