The Island Now

After a 12-10 victory at Merrimack on Saturday, senior midfielder Gregory Puskuldjian from the Adelphi University men’s lacrosse team has been recognized as the Northeast-10 Conference Player of the Week for the period ending Sunday, April 20.

Puskuldjian, a Glen Head native, took control of the face-off ‘X’ for the Panthers against Merrimack. He won 20 of 25 attempts in the game, helping Adelphi control the pace of the game.  The senior also grabbed 10 ground balls and chipped in a goal. It’s the first time this year he has won this award.

And for the third time this season, the Northeast-10 Conference recognized senior attack Devan Crimi as Player of the Week for the period ending Sunday, April 20.

Crimi, of West Islip, put together another strong week for the Panthers, scoring 11 points on seven goals and four assists in two Brown and Gold wins. Her best game of the week was a five-goal, three-assist performance in a win over Saint Michael’s. She also grabbed four ground balls and four caused turnovers on the week.

Women’s Golf

Ann Obermeyer has been named the first Adelphi University women’s golf coach effective for the 2014-15 academic year.

Obermeyer brings a wealth of knowledge to the position with more than 20 years of experience. She currently sits as the teaching professional at the nearby Village of Sands Point Golf Course. At Sands Point since May 2007, Obermeyer oversees a junior golf program that features more than 120 juniors as well holding teaching duties and tournament operations responsibilities.

Obermeyer spent six months in 1993 as a teaching professional at Brae Burn Country Club in Scarsdale before becoming an assistant professional at two clubs in Cincinnati, OH. She first spent five years at Royal Oak Country Club before a year at the Kenwood Country Club. Prior to arriving at Sands Point, she spent eight seasons as the teaching professional at Quaker Ridge Golf Club in Scarsdale.

Men’s Tennis

Port Washington native Sander Brenner was one of four members of the Adelphi University men’s tennis team to earn All-Conference status for their performances this season, as announced by the Northeast-10 Conference office on Monday.

Headlining the awards was Uladzislau Litvinchuk, who was named Rookie of the Year, as voted upon by the league’s head coaches. He also earned one of the six spots on the All-Rookie squad and was named to the First Team at No. 5 singles. Joining Litvinchuk on the First Team was Justin Vijungco for his season-long performance at No. 6 singles. He compiled a perfect 9-0 record at sixth flight. Rounding out the singles awards for Adelphi was a Second Team selection for Chiwete Njokanma at No. 4 singles, where he played for the majority of the season.

In doubles, Litvinchuk and Brenner earned First Team kudos at the No. 2 spot. The duo recorded a 7-1 overall record at the position on the season, and won their last five regular-season doubles matches. Njokanma and Vijungco were also rewarded for their efforts at No. 3 doubles with a Second Team selection.

Softball

The Adelphi University softball team traveled to the campus of Southern Connecticut State University to complete their series against the Owls. After sweeping them earlier this month, the Panthers dropped a 3-2 decision to the host team. The loss brings the Brown and Gold to 21-15 overall as they stand at 11-7 in Northeast-10 conference play and 8-6 in the Southwest Division. The Blue and White improve to 13-18, 5-12 in NE-10 play and 4-10 in the division.

Katie Andrews, Jordan Catalano and Mary O’Reilly each had a 2-for-3 day at the plate, the latter two accounting for the two Adelphi runs in the loss. Andrews also appeared on the mound for the Panthers, pitching 3.2 innings of scoreless relief.

Earlier in the week, the team claimed the final two games of this weekend’s series on Saturday at American International 4-1 and 5-3 to win the series three game to one. The day before Adelphi earned a 2-0 win in the day’s finale to split today’s doubleheader at American International after the host was victorious 4-1 in the opener.

Baseball

In a non-conference contest Monday afternoon on William J. Bonomo Memorial Field, the Adelphi University baseball team earned a 9-4 victory over Concordia College. With the win, the Panthers improve to 18-16 on the season as the Clippers fall to 6-20 overall.

Senior captain Richard Mejia led the way at the plate, going 3-for-5 with two runs scored. Teammate Nick Zito went 2-for-5 at the plate with two RBIs and one run scored for the Brown and Gold.

John Bivas relieved starter Stephen Bove in the fifth inning to pick up his second win of the season as Michael Ceparano appeared on the hill in the middle of the eighth to close the game and earn the save.

A bottom of the ninth inning rally allowed the Adelphi University baseball squad a split during a doubleheader with division rival Le Moyne Friday. The visiting Dolphins claimed game one 9-1 while the Panthers came back to win the nightcap 8-7.

The day before, the Dolphins scored seven runs in the top of the eighth inning to earn a 21-8 decision over the Panthers.
