Quit stalling

The Island Now

The Nassau County Interim Finance Authority charged last week that county officials are continuing to drag their feet when it comes to meeting the NIFA requirements.

As of May 1 NIFA Director George Marlin said Nassau County Attorney John Ciampoli had turned over only two contracts for NIFA review.

The interim authority has oversight over all county contracts for more than $50,000.

Marlin said the stalling by the county will make it harder for not-for-profit organizations to collect the money that is coming to them. Some of these organizations that provide valuable services to the county have not been paid for moths. Many of these organizations operate on slim margins. These delays are painful.

NIFA has 30 days to approve or disapprove a contract once it is submitted. But it can’t do anything until it gets the contract.

We understand that the county officials don’t like having to answer to big brother.

But it’s time they get over it. NIFA was created to get the county’s finances under control and that is in everyone’s interest.
