Reach Out America to hold climate change talk

The Island Now

Reach Out America will be hosting a meeting with one of their founders and the current chief sustainability officer for the Town of North Hempstead on Sept. 11. Fran Reid, who just returned from a three-day training session with Al Gore and The Climate Reality Project, will be presenting current information on climate change, how it is affecting our area what we can do about it.

The Climate Reality Project, founded and chaired by former vice president and Nobel Laureate Al Gore, is dedicated to pursuing a global cultural movement demanding action on the climate crisis. Despite international scientific consensus on climate change, the global community still lacks the resolve to implement meaningful solutions. The Climate Reality Project exists to forge a bedrock of support necessary for urgent action.

Since joining the Town of North Hempstead as the chief sustainability officer, Reid has had the honor of overseeing two award winning programs. The New York State Environmental Excellence award winning Town of North Hempstead Recycling Partnership Program, serves nine school districts, 47 buildings and 35,000 students.

Under the leadership of town Supervisor Jon Kaiman, Reid has also been able to launch the first pharmaceutical collection event in Nassau County and the first residential and school composting and rain barrel programs on Long Island.

The meeting will take place on Sept. 11, at 2 p.m. at The Unitarian Universalist Congregation at Shelter Rock, 48 Shelter Rock Road, in Manhasset. ROA’s regular meeting will begin at 12:30 p.m. Refreshments will be served and all are welcome. For information call (516)487-8782.
