Rep. Israel to speak at suburban aging program

The Island Now

“Aging in Place in Suburbia: Living Better with Technology,” is the second regional conference and expo focusing on improving the lives of seniors in Nassau County and suburban communities everywhere.

The free event will be taking place later this month on Wednesday, Aug. 21.

Rep. Steve Israel will be the keynote speaker at the event and more than 70 exhibitors will provide information on how technology can be used to positively impact senior care, transportation and travel, home construction, safety, fitness, socialization, and other essential areas of particular concern for Long Islanders who want to remain in their own homes as they age.

“I am proud to join once again with great partners Hofstra University and North Shore-LIJ,” Town of North Hempstead Supervisor Jon Kaiman said, “With the proliferation of technology, the conference and expo will help aging Long Islanders and their families learn how they can use different services to enhance the lives of seniors, helping them live more independently and safely in their own homes.”

Some of the most innovative technological advances will be on display including demonstrations of telemedicine by North Shore LIJ, instruction on how to use an IPad or mobile device to monitor your health, and Smart Homes, which can tell you your blood pressure and other health information anywhere in your home.

“All the latest demographic research shows that we are aging as a community faster and faster. This so-called gray wave will engulf us if we don’t find ways to let people age gracefully and safely in their own homes. Providing the latest technology will help make that experience all the better,” Lawrence Levy of Hofstra University said.

Published authors will also make presentations. They include Hal Spielman, “Suddenly Solo:  A Lifestyle Road Map for the Mature Widowed or Divorced Man,” Abby Stokes, “Is This Thing On?” a computer handbook for seniors, and Katherine Bouton, “Shouting Won’t Help: Why I – and 50 Million Other Americans—Can’t Hear You,” which discusses the newest assistive devices for the hearing impaired.

The event will be from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at North Hempstead’s “Yes We Can” Community Center, located at 141 Garden Street in Westbury.

Transportation will be available from various locations throughout the town. There will be a free lunch voucher for the first 500 attendees. Space is limited; please make sure you register today. For more information, please call 311.
