Responsible party fails to back platform

The Island Now

In the last few weeks I have been concerned by the Kings Point Responsible Government Party’s campaign.  These are my concerns:

Two planks in the party platform are “Transparency” and “Rationalize the zoning laws and regulations.”

I have not seen any information from the party’s candidates regarding which features of the current zoning law they believe to be irrational nor what changes they contemplate.

I know the zoning law to have been written, and on occasion revised, by a very rational democratic process. Their suggestion is not transparent. It is opaque.  What is the real substance of this agenda?  Exactly what interests will be served by such “rationalization”?

Another plank is “Honesty, Integrity and Leadership.

This implies that the current trustees and mayor lack these qualities.  But the party candidates have also said, ”To put it simply, Kings Point is a wonderful place to raise a family, to run a business or to retire with loved ones…” and “We are proud to say that King Point is a great community.…”

Do the opposition candidates sincerely wish us to believe that the community realized these lofty goals having been lead by the dishonest, the unsound and the meek?

The party’s plank seeking term limits is transparently self-serving and makes no sense. Current officeholders have no overriding powers over the village electorate that warrant creating such a restriction.

More often than not, candidates for village office have run unopposed.  Merely finding new willing candidates is an issue.  And in the instance in which an office holder has had overwhelming public support, as Mayor Kalnick has, this arbitrary restriction would deprive the community of popular favored candidates unless overturned.

Does the very recent case of the Mayor of New York City ring a bell here?

In contrast to the scurrilous literature of the KPRGP and as a 19-year resident of Kings Point, I know all of the members of the current administration to be honest, open, ethical, civil, and democratic leaders who devote many hours of their time and have served to provide a secure, clean, beautiful, tranquil and efficiently managed village.

They will have my vote.  I urge that they have yours.
