Returfing to be finished by Labor Day

Manhasset School District Superintendent of Schools Charles Cardillo said Wednesday that the district’s project to re-turf the football field and replace the track at Manhasset High School will likely be completed by Labor Day weekend.

“Labor Day is more of a realistic date for substantial completion,” Cardillo said.

Cardillo said at the Board of Education’s reorganization meeting in July that the project would be finished by the middle of August, but project officials have told him they need more time to finish the work.

Cardillo said all the preliminary work to ready the field for turfing is completed.

Once the field is returfed, the new track will be installed, Cardillo said. The old track, which Cardillo said has been in place for 25 years, was removed in early August.

Cardillo said the only sport impacted by the project is football, which begins practices Aug. 19. Other high school sports teams return Aug. 26, and middle school athletics begin Sept. 9.

“Having the project completed by Labor Day weekend still allows us to have the stadium field and track available for when we’d need it at the beginning of the school year,” Cardillo said.

Cardillo said he would meet with the project manager, architect and other project officials Thursday for another update.
