Richard Stein Sr. dies at age 82

New Hyde Park community activist Richard Alexander Stein Sr. died on Feb. 15 following a long illness. He was 82 years old.

Born in Manhattan on Aug. 29, 1930, he moved to New Hyde Park with his family when he was eight years old.

A graduate of Sewanhaka High School, Stein served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, stationed in Alaska during his two years of service.

He was an electrical contractor as president of his own local company, R&S and Sons Inc., which he established in 1955. 

Stein was very active in community organizations, including the BPO Elks of New Hyde Park and the New Hyde Park Lions for more than 50 years. During that time he served as both a deputy district governor and president of the Lions Club. He ran the annual Christmas tree lot to raise money for the Lions Club for many years.

He delivered eyes as a volunteer for the Eye Tank of North Shore University Medical Center.

Stein was also a member of the Nassau Electric League, where he served as president and a member of the board of directors. The league is a trade organization that seeks to improve safety standards and improve the industry.

“He was a man of few words,” said his daughter Susan Stein.

His son, New Hyde Park Fire Commissioner Rick Stein Jr. said his father was an avid golfer.

Survivors include his wife, Jane, of 59 years; his sister, Diane Wilson; his daughter, Susan, and his sons, Rick, Michael and Paul. Another son, James, predeceased him. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Kristen Stein Goldberg, Kelly Stein Russo, Kerianne Stein, Craig Posner, Kimberly Stein, Mollie Stein, Natalie Stein, Douglas Posner, Sofia Stein, Montana Stein, Montgomery Stein. His great grandson, Angelo James Russo, also survives him.

Services were held at the New Hyde Park Funeral Home in New Hyde Park on Feb. 17 and 18. A cremation followed the services.
