Roslyn Adult Education announces fall schedule

The Island Now

Registration is now open for the fall semester of Roslyn Adult Education. Many courses begin the week of Sept. 30. Adult Education has more than 75 offerings in creative arts, exercise and dance, computers, humanities, languages, lifestyles, cultural trips and more, including many new day and evening offerings for fall 2013.

Exercise classes range from aerobics to Zumba with all different classes in between such as T’ai Chi for Arthritis (both beginner and intermediate), Pilates, Yoga and a new core and balance combo class.

Creative Arts classes take place in Roslyn High School or Herricks Community Center include drawing and painting, clay sculpture, watercolor painting, oil and acrylic painting and piano. There are two new music classes being offered this fall. The Pleasures of Music is a course designed for the curious mind as well as for music lovers and delves into the role music has played throughout history. Musical Images, How Great Composers Enhance Beauty and Expression in All of the Arts will be presented by a prize-winning pianist who will lead discussions as well as perform.

Learn games such as Bridge or Mah Jongg to keep your mind sharp. A variety of crafts are offered that include some old favorites such as jewelry making, crochet and knitting. The Humanities and Sciences section includes classes in Astronomy, Archaeology and Film Noir.

Languages offered are Italian, Spanish, Chinese and French for beginners. Our new Health and Wellness section has courses such as sleep wellness, and healthy living and eating. The Lifestyles section has many courses such as Adoption: Myths & Realities, Write Away for those interested to explore the craft of writing, and there is a series of sessions on the Secrets of Organizing Your Life.

Residents of the Roslyn, Herricks, and East Williston school districts are able to take Adult Education courses. Residents of all three districts pay the resident rate for course offerings and trips, and are eligible for senior citizen discounts as well. Classes are held at both the Roslyn Adult Education and the Herricks Community Center.

The Adult Education office is in the Roslyn Public Schools Annex at 440 Round Hill Road, next door to Roslyn High School and across the street from the East Hills School (in the St. Mary’s building).
