Roslyn High School briefly evacuated following bomb threat

Roslyn High School was briefly evacuated on Friday morning after students reported e-mails they received from a former student that a bomb would go off somewhere on campus, school officials said.

Superintendent of Schools Dan Brenner said in a statement released to Roslyn parents on Friday afternoon that Nassau County Police conducted a search of the school and found the threat to be “non-credible.”

“As you can imagine, we take matters of safety and perceived threats very seriously,” Brenner said. “Please be assured we have conveyed our strong concerns and are fully cooperating with appropriate authorities.

A Nassau County Police spokeswoman said received a call requesting assistance at the school at 11:22 a.m. but declined to comment on the nature of the call.

“Whatever it was was a short, minor thing and it’s over and done with,” she said.

Students were returned to their classes around 11:45 a.m., she said.

Brenner said an investigation into the nature of the threat is ongoing by both school district and law enforcement officials.

Roslyn High School students said they were twice evacuated from the building but for no longer than five minutes each time.

Senior Emmanuel Gonzalez said he learned of the threat from friends who volunteer at the Roslyn Highlands Fire Department that e-mails began circulating on Sunday from a former Roslyn student who said a bomb would go off at the high school on Friday.

A second e-mail, he said, was sent early Friday. Gonzalez said he was not one of the recipients.

“At first, they thought it was just a fire drill, and then later we learned it was not a fire drill, but a bomb threat,” Gonzalez said. “That’s when everyone was taken outside.”

Freshman Daniella DiMarco was on the second floor in a writing enrichment class when she was told to evacuate.

She said she was not told about a bomb threat until after she went out a second time minutes later, after which she said police and fire department officials arrived at the school.

“They just evacuated us, nobody really said anything,” she said. “I heard outside that people were saying, ‘Oh, it’s a bomb threat.’ Then the police came.”

Calls placed to the Nassau County Fire Marshals office and Roslyn Highlands Fire Departments were not immediately returned.
