Roslyn resident Mark Claster has been elected as the new chairman of the North Shore-LIJ Health System’s board of trustees, officials said Monday.

Claster, a trustee for more than 20 years, succeeds Richard D. Goldstein, who had held the position since 2010, officials said.

“Mark fully understands the role of the chairperson in a complex organization like North Shore-LIJ. He has been an instrumental member of the board for many years.” said Michael Dowling, president and chief executive officer of the North Shore-LIJ Health System. “I am certain his business acumen, financial knowledge and, most importantly, his compassion will be invaluable in the upcoming years as we continue to improve North Shore-LIJ’s national reputation for delivering high-quality health care.”

Claster currently serves on the executive committee of the health system’s Lenox Hill Hospital and Staten Island University Hospital, as a member of the Joint Board of Overseers at the Hofstra North Shore-LIJ School of Medicine and North Shore-LIJ’s Long Island Home in Amityville, which includes South Oaks Hospital and Broadlawn Manor Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, officials said.

In taking over the chairman’s position, Claster now oversees a board of trustees that consists of 120 active members, 17 life trustees and 24 honoree trustees.

“As I contemplated assuming my new role as chairman of the board of trustees of North Shore-LIJ, I realized I have a wonderful opportunity to build upon the legacy of all of those who came before me,” Claster said in a statement. “I have an opportunity to contribute to the continued evolution of our health system and help guide the institution through what promises to be a very challenging period as the face of healthcare continues to rapidly change.”

Claster began his career as an attorney specializing in corporate and individual tax law and estate planning. He holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Ohio University, a Juris Doctorate degree from Hofstra University’s School of Law and a master of law degree in taxation from New York University’s School of Law.

Claster is currently the president of the middle-market merchant bank Carl Marks & Co., Inc. and serves as a partner of Carl Marks Advisory Group, LLC. Carl Marks Healthcare Partners LLC., and Carl Marks Merchant Partners. He also co-founded the Carl Marks Real Estate Group.

Claster’s wife Susan is also a board member of the Feinstein Institute for Medical Research and the Elmezzi Graduate School of Molecular Medicine.
