Russel Gardens OKs new parking hours

The Village of Russel Gardens Board of Trustees on Thursday unanimously voted to approve new parking hours on 15 village streets in an effort to create more uniform parking regulations.

Drivers will be able to park on the village streets for four hours between 8 a.m. and 2 a.m., according to the law.

Some of the streets listed in the law will only have one side affected by the change, while other streets will have both sides changed.

Village of Russel Gardens Mayor Steven Kirschner said the four-hour limit between 8 a.m. and 2 a.m. was the general rule for village streets, but some varied.

“Some started parking at 10:30 a.m. instead of 8 a.m.,” he said.

Kirschner said other streets only allowed a two-hour parking limit, instead of four.

Some residents complained about the varying hours after they had received parking tickets from the village’s code enforcers, Kirschner said.

Kirschner said board members agreed to make the hours uniform after other village officials could not explain why the hours differed.

“If you can’t give a logical reason for a particular law, maybe the law is wrong,” he said.

Kirschner said the law and new parking hours will not go into effect until it is filed with the state secretary of state and signs displaying the parking hours can be placed.

“So probably later this month [the law will take effect],” he said. “We’ll tell our code enforcers to not give out tickets until then.”
