A United States Postal Service truck hit and killed a Sands Point man on the Long Island Expressway Thursday morning, a Nassau County Police Department spokesperson said.
The eastbound tractor-trailer hit Mark K. Feldman, 54, at 4:55 a.m. after he pulled over to fix a flat tire near the Glen Cove Road exit in Old Westbury. He was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.
The accident closed all eastbound lanes leading up to the scene, causing traffic to stop for more than five hours.
Exit ramps west of the scene were backed up as highway signs rerouted drivers onto the Northern State Parkway to get around the accident.
The driver of the truck that hit the man remained at the scene, police said. There is no criminality at this time, police said, but the investigation of the accident is still ongoing.
