Scherer reply to Morris letter

The Island Now

This is in response to Dr. Stephen Morris’ letter in the Sept. 28 issue.

Or should I say Dr. Morris’ weekly diatribe about the evils of not thinking exactly what he thinks. Every time I read one of his letters I think “this time I have to reply” but I never do. Until now.

I would have passed up this opportunity also if not for the misogynistic comment about Nancy Pelosi’s pearls. Really Dr. Morris, commenting on Mrs. Pelosi’s pearls? Is it Mikimoto pearls in particular that you’re against? Or pearls in general?

I do know that, like most Republicans, you don’t seem to like a strong, intelligent woman, Dr. Morris. But in the end, what business of yours is it what Nancy Pelosi wears around her neck or anywhere else on her body? I’m sure you had a smug smile on your face as you typed that comment. Shame on you.

Dr. Morris, in the second paragraph, you ask that progressives try and stick with “my facts.” Your facts? Your facts? Excuse me, I didn’t realize we could all have our own set of facts. I thought there were only the facts.

You state in most of your letter that are “not going to talk about…..” whatever. And then proceed to talk about whatever.

You refer to “Obama’s newly-fortified embassy.” Actually, Dr. Morris, it was a consulate. Our embassy in Libya is in Tripoli.

Can you tell me, Dr. Morris, why you use the word “progressive” like it’s a bad thing? Actually, I prefer to be a “progressive” rather than a “regressive.”

I am not going to bother rebutting each and every paragraph of your letter. I will not give you the satisfaction. You are convinced that if only all of us progressives read enough of your letters, we will see the error of our ways and abandon our support of President Obama and come over to your side, which in your world is the correct side. In your world we are not allowed the freedom to think about issues differently. In your world we progressives are “obtuse, vague, and bigoted.” Hmmm, that comment sounds a bit bigoted on your part.

By the way, it does not matter where the president was born. Since his mother was born in Kansas, he is an American. Even if he was born on a rock in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean.

You end this particular letter with the words “it’s my money you want to spend.” Tell me, Dr. Morris, did you have a problem with “your money” being spent on two unfunded wars, wars in which thousands upon thousands upon thousands of people were killed? Personally I have no problem at all with “my money” being spent so that everyone can eat on a daily basis. Would you rather that children (the biggest percentage of people collecting food stamps) just starve? I know from personal experience just how difficult it is to qualify for food stamps.

To sum up, Dr. Morris, perhaps you should acquire another hobby. Other than insulting progressives in the newspaper on a weekly basis.
