Schimel, Schneiderman honor Newtown

The Island Now

State Assemblywoman Michelle Schimel and state Attorney General Eric Schneiderman recently joined with advocates, clergy, and survivors on the steps of New York City Hall to mark the six month anniversary of the Newtown, Conn. massacre. New York was the first state to take decisive action toward a future with tighter restrictions against gun violence following the tragedy . However, the federal government has yet to follow in New York State’s admirable footsteps.

The New York SAFE Act provides New Yorkers with strong protections against gun violence by requiring universal background checks, banning assault weapons, reducing high capacity magazines, and preventing dangerous, violent mentally ill from owning guns.

“We were the first state in the nation, in the aftermath of the tragedies of Newtown and Webster, to enact gun control legislation,” said Schimel. “Now, six months later, it is still up to other states and the federal government to follow New York’s lead.”
