State Assemblywoman Michelle Schimel and the Jewish Community Relations Council recently sponsored a county wide day of remembrance to reflect and recognize the work of the youth of the county to create a more civil society.

Close to 300 persons attended the event, held at the Hofstra University Student Center Theater, in partnership with Nassau County’s State Senate Delegation and Nassau County’s State Assembly Delegation.

Schimel welcomed her colleagues in the state Legislature, the parents, and honored students to this event with a quote from Anne Frank, “Despite everything, I believe that people are really good at heart…Everybody has inside of him a piece of good news. The good news is that you don’t know how great you can be! How much you can love! What you can accomplish! And what your potential is!”

She said the students were nominated by their schools for projects including helping the homeless, collecting school supplies for Hurricane Sandy victims, preparing packages for our troops overseas, raising money to build schools in developing nations, and doing beach clean ups.

Arthur Katz, JCRC-LI chairman, talked about how “inspiring it was to be in a room with 300 people to honor and recognize all the good to which young people in Nassau County are committed.”

Nassau County resident and holocaust survivor Charlotte Schwimmer was also honored. She described her experience as “an innocent girl who had her childhood taken away, and her whole life altered beyond imagination just because of her religion.”

Rabbi Michael A. White of Temple Sinai of Roslyn recited the memorial prayer before six lit yahzreit candle to remember the six million Jews killed in the holocaust.

The students honored from Great Neck North High School were Laura Simeon, Tyler Bloom, Emily Nassir, and Doris Descorbeth. Aidan Owens from Manhasset High School was among the students honored, and the students honored from Temple Sinai in Roslyn were Evan Mester, and Perri and Allie Schreiber.
