Stergiopoulos family helps celebrate Bears Hockey

The Island Now

The end-of-season celebration for the Great Neck Park District Bears Hockey team took place at the Andrew Stergiopoulos Ice Rink on Friday, April 11. The players and their families showed up at 5:45 p.m. for the award ceremony and dinner. Upon arrival, the team dressed in their hockey gear and got out on the ice for a short skate period.

George and Angela Stergiopoulos, through the Andrew Stergiopoulos Foundation, generously donated rink dividers to the Park District in honor of their late son Andrew. Andrew Stergiopoulos was a dedicated hockey player whose memory lives on at the Parkwood Sports Complex’s Andrew Stergiopoulos Ice Rink, renamed in his honor after 9/11.

The players were able to see first-hand how essential the dividers are to the skating program. The dividers are vital to the Bears Hockey program because only half the ice is used for their games. The dividers allow two games to be simultaneously played. They can also be used during Skate School lessons and public sessions. The Great Neck Park District is very grateful for their gift.

Everyone was then asked to join the ceremony in the lounge area where the awards were presented by Hockey Director Marsella and the Stergiopoulos’s. Each player received a trophy and Bears T-shirt in recognition of their skillful performance on the ice this past season. There was an honorable mention of seven teammates who will be moving up to the Bruins Squirt travel team next year. The Squirts will now have a total of 11 Bears team players. The coaches are very proud of all the skaters.

Everyone enjoyed the dinner that followed. Food was kindly donated by all the parents, which was delicious and very much appreciated.

A special thank you goes out to Nick Maviomichalis, Bibi Mohan and Micah Hollander for the delicious food they shared with everyone.
