Stern family rehab center receives recognition

The North Shore-LIJ Health System announced today that its Stern Family Center for Rehabilitation has been ranked by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services as being in the top four percent of rehabilitation facilities in New York State for its overall performance.

The Manhasset rehabilitation facility was also given first place by CMS for having fewer short-term stay hospitalizations that could have otherwise been avoided as well as decreasing the incidence of bladder incontinence for patients who have short-term stays.

In addition, Stern was ranked in second place for state health inspections and fifth place for its registered nurse hours per day.

“Providing such quality care and achieving these rankings is due to our dedicated, highly trained staff who provide hands-on care for our patients each and every day,” said Maureen McClusky, Stern executive director.

Stern was previously recognized by CMS in 2009 as being among the top 12 percent of the country’s long-term care facilities.

Seventy-two rehabilitation facilities in New York were analyzed for three years to determine these rankings that were included in CMS’ Nursing Home Value-Based Purchasing Demonstration. This demonstration’s goal is to improve the quality of care while also reducing health care costs.

Stern, which is on the campus of North Shore University Hospital, opened in 1989. It is a short-term rehabilitation and skilled nursing facility with 249 beds.
