Story unfair to Esagoff

The Island Now

I am not a subscriber to the Great Neck News, but when I got you free offer last week I thought that I would take advantage of it and see how I like your local paper. I have read Karen Rubin’s work in the past , and have seen her working hard on her job around town, so I thought,”Why not?”

Then I read your lead story. I think the entire thing was slanted and not a news piece, but a quasi-editorial. Who is the anonymous board member who figures in the article? What has Ms. Esagoff’s marital status or change of name have to do with the sad facts of her son’s behavior. And how is all that related to her ability to do her job on the library board?

It looked like a hatchet job to me.

A better investigative reporter might have looked into the mad rush to acquire, at any price, high scores on the SAT. She might have commented on the fact that test scores matter now, more than other indications of achievement, all through the school years. Then the link to the sad story of selling and buying scores might have had more resonance.

Anyway, to your offer I say,”No thanks.” I’ll try the Record.
