ADVANCED STYLE

Directed by Lina Plioplyte. USA, 2014, 72 min.

Special Guests Ari Seth Cohen, the blogger behind Advanced Style, and several women who are featured in the film.

A hat-obsessed, bike-riding, part-time vintage store employee who trades shifts for clothing items. A mild-mannered lounge singer with the longest, most carefully groomed eyelashes you’ve ever seen. The advice-spouting owner of the popular boutique Off Broadway. These are the subjects of director Lina Plioplyte’s inspiring documentary Advanced Style. Pulled from the strongest entries on renowned fashion photographer Ari Seth Cohen’s popular blog, Advanced Style tells the fabulous true tales of seven of New York’s most stylish elderly women. Ranging in age from 62 to 95, these women refuse to fade into the background of society and instead flaunt their eclectic styles and embrace their individuality through their clothes and personal stories. Thanks to their exposure on Cohen’s blog, they’ve now obtained a devoted by legendary fashion labels, NY Fashion Week and much younger fashion mavens who aspire to pull off clothes with the ease of these ladies. Filled with colorful vitality, each vignette bursts with life, humor and, of course, style. Like the mantra for its characters, Plioplyte’s affirming doc reminds us that age is just a number and beauty is forever.

MOOD INDIGO

Directed by Michel Gondry. France, 2013, 95 min. In French with English subtitles.

Starring Audrey Tautou and Romain Duris

Eminently inventive Michel Gondry (Oscar Winner, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind) finds an ideal counterpart in Boris Vian, whose novel Foam of the Daze provides the foundation for this manic, visionary love story. Romain Duris plays wealthy bachelor Colin, whose hobbies include developing his pianocktail (a cocktail-making piano) and devouring otherworldly dishes prepared by his trusty chef Nicolas (Omar Sy). When Colin learns that his best friend Chick (Gad Elmaleh), a fellow acolyte of the philosopher Jean-Sol Partre, has a new American girlfriend, our lonely hero attends a friend’s party in hopes of falling in love himself. He soon meets Chloé (Audrey Tautou) and, before they know it, they’re dancing to Duke Ellington and plunging headfirst into a romance that Gondry rapturously depicts as only he can. Nominated for three 2014 César Awards (French Academy Awards).

A PLACE IN HEAVEN

Directed by Yossi Madmony. Israel, 2013, 117 min. In Hebrew with English subtitles.

A sweeping, deeply allegorical story of an admired war hero and his conflicted relationship with his son. When a retired general lies on his deathbed, bitter and alone, his estranged son, an ultra-orthodox Jew, tries to save his soul from hell. This quasi-Biblical, epic drama spans the history of Israel through 40 years and three wars, yet, like director Yossi Madmony’s previous film Restoration, it is, at its heart, about the relationship between a father and a son.
