A fire at a Garden City Park liquor store in North New Hyde Park late Saturday night has been deemed suspicious by fire authorities, who said the fire is under investigation.

Members of the Garden City Park Fire Department responded to a call from workers for an oil burner company at 10:03 p.m. on Dec. 29 at 1621 Hillside Ave., Garden City Park Fire Department Chief William Rudnick said.

“They recognized that the odor wasn’t oil burning, but wood burning,” Rudnick said.

Two Garden City Park engines were dispatched to the scene along with several Nassau County Police.

When the Garden City Park firemen arrived on the scene, Rudnick said they initially detected the odor of something burning, but couldn’t locate a fire. While checking addresses adjacent to the one the call was about, the firefighters subsequently discovered a fire in the rear of the first floor of V.J. Wine & Liquor at 1623A Hillside Ave..

“We determined that there was a small fire that was extinguished inside the liquor store,” Rudnick said. “The fire was deemed suspicious.”

There were no injuries at the scene. County fire marshals were summoned to the scene for an investigation of the fire that is continuing, Rudnick said.
