Takeover at the jail

The Island Now

At long last something is being done to address the miserable health care provided inmates at the Nassau County jail.

It’s natural that the inmates in the jail don’t generate much sympathy from taxpayers doing their best to make ends meet in difficult times.

Nevertheless we suspect that most people want to be certain that the inmates are being treated humanely and are getting the care that they need.

The Armor Correctional Health Services of New York Inc. took over in-jail services on May 14 from Nassau Health Care Corporation, which operates Nassau University Medical Center.

cording to studies by Nassau County Chapter of the New York Civil Liberties Union and the County Comptroller, Nassau Health Care had failed miserably to live up to its responsibility.

Nassau County Executive Edward Mangano said the contract with Armor Correctional Services will save the county nearly $12 million while delivering much better care.

But some questions remain unanswered: Why didn’t the jail administrators address this problem?

Why did it take a lawsuit from the NYCLU to bring attention to the wretched standard of the health services at the county jail?
