Team Xtreme takes softball tourney title

The Island Now

The NHP Team Xtreme girls softball team won the 4th Annual Big Apple Softball Tournament with an exciting 3-2 win in the championship game over a very good Lady Cobras team.

After seeding first on Saturday with two wins and a tie, Team Xtreme beat East Meadow Elites 7-2 in the semifinal game on Sunday morning to move into the finals.

In the semi final win Team Xtreme jumped out to a 2-0 lead on a two-run single off the bat of Maggie Donnelly which scored Kayla Fitzpatrick and Ann Grimshaw who had also singled. With the score 3-2 NHP in the fifth inning Hannah Arkin led off with a beautiful drag bunt hit.

Nicole Kuzler followed with another perfectly placed bunt for another single. Hannah scored on an RBI groundout off the bat of Lauren Mistretta and Kuzler scored off an RBI bunt by Patricia Gannon. Lindsey Mistretta pitched a complete game for the win for Team Xtreme. Fitzpatrick had a terrific leaping catch at first base to save an extra base hit.

In the Championship Game, the Lady Cobras took a 2-0 lead into the fourth inning but Team Xtreme turned the tides.

After a walk to Arkin, Grimshaw crushed one to left for an RBI stand up triple. Donnelly followed with an RBI single to tie the game. Gabby Morales singled to move Donnelly to third.

After the runners moved up on a fielders choice, Donnelly took off for home on a wild pitch and beat the tag to give Team Xtreme the 3-2 lead.

Victoria Overbeck pitched a masterful seven-inning complete game for the win, but received some great defensive plays in the field.

The play of the game came in the seventh inning with the tying run on first. The Lady Cobras hitter drove one to deep left center but Morales made a running catch for the out. Lindsey Mistretta played a solid defensive game at short while adding a single.

Kuzler made two nice catches in center field for Team Xtreme. The game ended with Donnelly catching a pop up down the left field line behind her for the win.

Team Xtreme played the tournament without ace pitcher Melissa Ward who injured her ankle the previous week.

The team has one more tournament this fall in the U14 division.

Team Xtreme is also 6-0 in the Bellmore Fall League that will wrap up on Oct 20.
